Updating website SEO

How to configure home page SEO?

  • Login to your website’s Admin Control Panel f you are already logged in switch to Settings tab) and click Settings
  • Select General from the left panel
  • Finally, click Save Changes

Indexing & analytics

Google Webmaster Tools is a service by Google, which helps you to get your website indexed on Google servers. Registering your website on Google Webmaster tools is the first step towards getting your website indexed by Google search engine. Similarly, you must register your website on Bing Webmaster Tools for quick indexing by Bing search engine.

How to get your website indexed on Google?

  • Visit Google Webmaster Tools - login with your Google account and register your website
  • A verification code is generated for your website, copy the verification key and make note of the same
  • Now, login to your website's Admin Control Panel and switch to Settings tab
  • In the left panel, select SEO - enter verification code in Google Webaster Tools field and click Save Changes
  • Switch back to Google Webmaster Tools and click Verify. This completes the registration of your website on Google Webmaster Tools

How to get your website indexed on Bing?

  • Visit Bing Webmaster Tools - login with your Microsoft account and register your website
  • A verification code is generated for your website, copy the verification key and make note of the same
  • Now, login to your website's Admin Control Panel and switch to Settings tab
  • In the left panel, select SEO - enter verification code in Google Webaster Tools field and click Save Changes
  • Switch back to Bing Webmaster Tools and click Verify. This completes the registration of your website on Bing Webmaster Tools

How to add robots.txt file?

Robots.txt is a text file which disallows search engines from indexing certain files such as .css (style sheet) files, .js (JavaScript) files etc. Robot.txt resides on the web server along with all the files and folders which make your website, and it blocks search engine’s robot programs from indexing specific files.

You can find online generators for building your robots.txt file. If you wish to build your own robots.txt file, refer The web robots pages for detailed instructions.

  • Login to your website’s Admin Control Panel and click Settings
  • In the left panel, select SEO and enter the code for your robots.txt file
  • Finally, click Save Changes

How to enable Google Analytics tracking for your website?

You can monitor your website traffic via Google Analytics, as BlackMonk provides a convenient way for enabling Google Analytics tracking for your website.

  • Login to Google Analytics and register your website. Upon registering a new website, Google Analytics generates a code snippet which meant to be embedded in the home page of the website. All you need to do is copy the tracking id included in the snippet (as shown below)
  • Select General from the left panel, and paste the tracking id in Google Analytics Tracking ID field
  • Finally, click Save Changes

SEO formats

BlackMonk allows you to define SEO title for each site element (i.e. home page, module/section page, listing page etc). For example, a content page (be it an article or a classifieds ad) can have a pre-defined SEO title such as:

Cabin for rent at crescent road | OnlineCalgary – here the SEO title is formed by putting together content title and site name

Sports | Team Calgary wins tournament | OnlineCalgary – here the SEO title is formed by putting together category, content title and site name

How to Configure SEO formats for site elements?

SEO title format can be defined for home page, module page (index page of article section, event section, business directory etc), listing page (category/sub-category/search page) and item page (article page, classifieds ad, event details page etc).

You can define SEO title format for site elements by choosing a combination of following entities:

DOMAIN NAME
yoursite.com
SITE NAME
Calgary Online, The Local Directory etc
MODULE NAME
Articles, Events, Business Directory (section name)
CATEGORY NAME
Sports, Music, Life Style, Entertainment etc
ITEM NAME
Content title (article title, event title, business listing title etc)

Note: The idle length of SEO title is 65-70 characters.

Here are the steps for defining SEO title format for various site elements:

  • Login to your website’s Admin Control Panel and switch to Settings tab
  • In the left panel select SEO, and enter SEO title format configuration for home page, module page, listing page and item page in respective fields
    You can define SEO title format by entering entering a combination of following attributes:
    DOMAIN NAME
    yoursite.com
    SITE NAME
    Calgary Online, The Local Directory etc
    MODULE NAME
    Articles, Events, Business Directory (section name)
    CATEGORY NAME
    Sports, Music, Life Style, Entertainment etc
    ITEM NAME
    Content title (article title, event title, business listing title etc)
  • Finally, click Save Changes

Content page SEO

SEO of individual content pages (i.e. article, event, classifieds ad etc) is automatically configured based on pre-defined SEO title format and content description (i.e article summary, first line of event description etc). However, you can customize the SEO title and SEO description for individual article, classifieds ad, event etc.

How to customize SEO of an article page?

  • Login to your website’s Staff Control Panel and switch to Articles tab
  • Locate the article for which you wish to customize SEO - click Settings Icon and select Update SEO from the dropdown menu
  • In the lightbox, enter SEO title and description
  • Finally, click Update to close the lightbox

How to customize SEO of a business listing?

  • Login to your website’s Staff Control Panel and switch to Business tab
  • Locate the business listing for which you wish to customize SEO - click and select Update SEO from the dropdown menu
  • In the lightbox, enter SEO title and description
  • Finally, click Update to close the lightbox

How to customize SEO of an event page?

  • Login to your website’s Staff Control Panel and switch to Events tab
  • Locate the event for which you wish to modify the SEO - click and select Update SEO from the dropdown menu
  • In the lightbox, enter SEO title and description
  • Finally, click Update to close the lightbox

How to customize SEO of a classifieds ad?

  • Login to your website’s Staff Control Panel and switch to Classifieds tab
  • Locate the classifieds ad for which you wish to customize SEO - click and select Update SEO from the dropdown menu

  • Locate the venue for which you wish to customize SEO and click
  • In the lightbox, enter SEO title and description
  • Finally, click Update to close the lightbox

Managing SEO of category/sub-category pages

For every category/sub-category that you add to articles section, events calendar, business directory, attractions guide etc - a page is created where listings belonging to that category/sub-category are displayed. You can customize the SEO of category/sub-category page to attract more traffic from search engines.
